Tobacco Dependence Workstream Directions 2021

Directions given by NHS England requiring NHS Digital to operate a system for the collection and dissemination of information relating to the prevention of smoking and the offer of supportive measures to individuals that wish to stop smoking.

Purpose

The purpose of these Directions (Purpose) is to enable NHS Digital to provide support for the commitments in the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) in relation to the prevention of smoking and the offer of supportive measures to individuals that wish to stop smoking. To deliver these commitments NHS England and NHS Improvement is investing £150m by 2023/24 through the LTP specifically by making available NHS funded tobacco treatment services, which will be implemented in inpatient, maternity, outpatient and community settings.

The data collected will support the NHS to appropriately offer services to individuals with the aim of reducing health inequalities

Legal basis

254(1), (3) and (6), section 260, section 261(2)(e) and section 304(9), (10) and (12) of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
