Transparency Notice – NHS England Secure Data Environment Service

This transparency notice explains briefly what the NHS England Secure Data Environment Service is and how we use and protect the data made available by this service in order to meet our obligations in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (UK GDPR).

The NHS England Secure Data Environment Service is a service provided by NHS England to allow approved researchers and other entities from trusted organisations to have timely, secure and safe access to health and social care data to help them with their healthcare research projects.

Researchers who wish to access the NHS England Secure Data Environment Service must first submit an application for using health data. Our Data Access Request Service (DARS) then manages this application to its conclusion by vetting applicants and their research purpose, as well as checking for legal compliance and requirements.

After these checks, a Data Sharing Agreement is signed by NHS England and the applicant and a safe space to access and work with the requested data is granted to the applicant, who is now a customer of the service.
