Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) is a data warehouse containing records of all patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. It contains details of inpatient care, outpatient appointments and A&E attendance records.
Hospital episode statistics (HES) statistics are produced and published on a monthly basis. This data is provisional and should therefore be treated as an estimate until the final National Statistics annual publications.
Key Facts
Monthly HES data for Admitted Patient Care
In the year from June 2017 to May 2018 there were:
• 20.1 million finished consultant episodes (FCEs)², 58.9 per cent (11.9 million) of which included at least one procedure or
intervention, and 7.2 million of which were day cases.
• 16.7 million finished admission episodes (FAEs)³ , of which 6.1 million were emergency admissions.
Monthly HES data for Outpatients
In the year from June 2017 to May 2018 there were:
• 120.0 million outpatient appointments made, with 93.9 million (78.2 per cent) of these attended by the patient.
• 8.0 million outpatient appointments not attended by the patient, representing 6.7 per cent of all appointments.
Monthly HES data for Accident & Emergency
In the year from June 2017 to May 2018 there were:
• 21.3 million A&E attendances recorded in A&E HES of which 3.9 million (18.4 per cent) resulted in admission to hospital for
admitted patient care. 3.3 million (15.3 per cent) resulted in a GP follow up, and 9.0 million (42.2 per cent) were discharged with
no follow up.
Included within this release is the Provisional Data Quality Report for Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS). This information has been published to assist with improvements to the data quality of reporting through Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS). This is not formally part of the Provisional Monthly HES for Admitted Patient Care, Outpatient and Accident and Emergency Data official statistics, but is included within this release as it has future relevance to this release.
