LSOA files

Breakdowns for both 2021 and 2011 LSOAs have been published throughout this year due to concerns regarding some patients not being allocated an LSOA. Following the transition from using National Health Applications and Infrastructure Services (NHAIS) to Personal Demographics Service (PDS) as the data source for this publication, patients with an invalid postcode are now allocated to an LSOA marked as 'CLOSED'. These 'CLOSED' LSOA's have now been included in the LSOA list size outputs for the first time and are present in both the 2011 and 2021 LSOA files.

As an explanation for this issue has now been identified, future iterations of this publication that are due to contain LSOA breakdowns will only contain a file mapping to 2021 LSOAs.

Summary

Data for this publication are extracted each month as a snapshot in time from the Primary Care Registration database within the PDS (Personal Demographics Service) system. This release is an accurate snapshot as at 1 October 2025.

Figures are reported by gender and single year of age (SYOA) and five-year age bands (up to age 95+) at GP Practice, Primary Care Network (PCN), Sub Integrated Care Board Location (SICBL), Integrated Care Board (ICB) and NHS England Commissioning Region levels. In addition, organisational mapping data is available to derive PCN, SICBL, ICB, and Commissioning Region for each GP practice and is updated each month to give relevant organisational mapping.

Quarterly publications in January, April, July and October will include Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) populations.
