NHS Surplus Land Quarter 2 2020/21

Official statistics, Experimental statistics

Summary

NHS Surplus Land Quarter 2 2020/21

The NHS Surplus Land collection has existed since 2008 to provide information to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), Homes England and the Office of Government Property (OGP) on sites that can be disposed of, thereby contributing to the Public Land for Housing Programme. The collection monitors the contribution made by the NHS to government targets on release of publicly owned land and the targets for contributions of income from public sector land sales. From 2020/21 onwards, reporting is done by data providers on an “as needed” basis on a live collection system, providing more up to date and transparent information to the public and reducing the burden to data providers. The live collection combines and replaces previous information sources on surplus land in the NHS, including the NHS Digital publication series. Please see the "Data Definitions" document for details of collection scope and an assessment of data quality.

This report presents as experimental statistics results based on the first extract from the live system for data as at 30 September 2020. 218 trusts as well as NHS Property Services (who provide managed NHS estate to trusts) provided confirmed validated data.

On 8th February 2021 we noticed that the Data Definitions and Quality report had incorrectly been labelled within the document as 2019/20. We have updated this to 2020/21 and republished as version 2. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

A total of 781 plots of land were declared as surplus or potentially surplus to requirements by 143 trusts and by NHS Property Services.

This includes land previous declared as surplus, but now confirmed to no longer be surplus.

Of these:

- 129 plots had already been sold (with a disposal year of 2019/20 onwards) covering a land area of 131.3 hectares and gross internal building floor area of 178 thousand square metres.

-560 plots were identified as being surplus or potentially surplus ("opportunities") covering a land area of 645.9 hectares and gross internal building floor area of 1,349 thousand square metres.

-The total surplus land area (including sold land, to be consistent with previously published measures) was 777.2 hectares.

The sales receipt for sold land totalled £305.8 million pounds and the estimated sales receipt for surplus land and opportunities was £1.2 billion pounds.

Issues of sensitivity were declared in relation to 361 plots of surplus land. These are included in the aggregate figures above, but not in any granular data in the underlying data (.csv) file.
