National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) - 2018

Audit, Open data

Summary

The National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) measures the quality of diabetes care provided to people with diabetes while they are admitted to hospital whatever the cause, and aims to support quality improvement. Data is collected and submitted by hospital staff in England and Wales. The NaDIA audit is part of the National Diabetes Audit (NDA) portfolio within the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP), commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP).

In September 2018 NaDIA undertook a snapshot audit of hospital characteristics in England and Wales.

In addition to the snapshot audit the collection of NaDIA-Harms began in England in 2018; this is a new continuous collection of serious inpatient harms that only affect people with diabetes. The NaDIA-Harms 2018 report can be found here - http://digital.nhs.uk/pubs/nadia2018

Key Facts

Participation in NaDIA Hospital Characteristics dipped in 2018 with over 20 sites failing to return a survey

Inpatient staffing levels for almost all diabetes professions have increased substantially since 2017

One fifth of hospitals still have no diabetes inpatient specialist nurses (DISNs)

Use of electronic prescribing and electronic patient records continues to rise slowly. Almost 65% of NaDIA sites still do not fully utilise electronic prescribing technology
