Case ascertainment analysis removed

This publication previously included analysis on case ascertainment in order to give an indication of how effective the registry is in identifying cases.  Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) data was used to identify operations that should have been recorded in the BCIR where the care was privately funded.  We have identified that there are several independent healthcare providers who have not submitted data to PHIN meaning that this data is incomplete and the previously published case ascertainment estimates are unreliable.  Therefore, the case ascertainment analysis has been removed from this publication.

Summary

This is the 4th publication of data from the Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry (BCIR). The report covers a calendar year and includes data for England and Scotland.

The report also includes breakdowns of device and mesh by manufacturer and reported instances of anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

The registry is designed to record the details of any individual who has a breast implant operation for any reason, so that they can be traced in the event of a product recall or other safety concern relating to a specific type of implant. The registry will also allow the identification of possible trends and complications relating to specific implants.

This report is to provide information on the uptake of the registry. It does not provide a comprehensive view of the number of breast implant operations undertaken.

  • 390 submitting organisations are currently registered to enter data in the registry - 367 in England and 23 in Scotland.
  • Since the registry opened in October 2016, data has been entered by 334 English and 13 Scottish submitting organisations.
  • 10,500 patients - 10,310 in England and 190 in Scotland - have been recorded as having at least 1 operation in the last year, between January and December 2020.
  • Data has been submitted to the registry about 10,740 operations - 10,545 in England and 190 in Scotland - undertaken between January and December 2020 at 127 NHS and 170 independent sector provider sites.
  • The number of recorded operations is lower than in the previous year, with submitted activity being particularly reduced between April and June 2020.  This may be due to the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19).
