Cancer Services Profiles, 2022 Annual Update

Correction to confidence interval method for five indicators

The 95% and 99.8% confidence interval data has been updated for five indicators: new cancer cases (crude incidence rate); in-patient or day-case colonoscopy procedures; in-patient or day-case sigmoidoscopy procedures; in-patient or day-case upper GI endoscopy procedures; and number of emergency admissions with cancer.

This update corrects the confidence interval methodology used for these indicators, aligning the methodology used with the approach stated in the supporting information.

Correction to England level bowel cancer screening coverage for historical data

The England level data for the bowel cancer screening coverage indicator has been updated for the historical data, from the 2009 to 2010 financial year to the 2020 to 2021 financial year.

This is due to a methodology error that previously inadvertently excluded a small number of cases for only England level data.

Summary

The interactive Cancer Services profile tool has been updated to include the latest financial year of data that are available, collated by the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS). For 28 indicators, the latest data is now available for the financial year 2021 to 2022; for the cancer incidence indicator the tool has been updated to include the 2020 to 2021 data.

Background

The profiles have been designed to support commissioners and health professionals to assess the impact of cancer on their local population and make decisions about services.

These profiles present data by general practitioner (GP) practice, primary care network (PCN), sub-Integrated Care Board (sub-ICB), Integrated Care Board (ICB) and at a national level on:

  • Cancer incidence and screening
  • Two-Week Wait (TWW) referrals
  • Diagnostic services
  • Emergency presentations and admissions

Data are shown for the 6,452 GP practices which have a list size of 1,000 or more patients and were either listed in the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) 2021 to 2022 or were listed in both the Attribution Data Set (ADS) and GP patient survey (GPPS) datasets.

Acknowledgements

This work uses data that has been provided by patients and collected by the NHS as part of their care and support. With some data sourced from NHS Digital and NHS England, the data is collated, maintained and quality assured by the National Disease Registration Service, which is part of NHS Digital.

Key Facts

  • the number of malignant cancer cases was updated for the financial year 2020 to 2021, reporting 276,979 new cases (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer), which is 456 cases per 100,000 population.
  • for the financial year 2021 to 2022, the proportion of eligible people attending screening within the relevant target periods was 62.3% for breast cancer screening; 68.6% of those aged 25 to 49 and 75.0% of those aged 50 to 64 for cervical screening, and 70.3% of 60 to 74 years old for bowel cancer screening.
