Mental health statistical publications

Links to a number of statistical publications, including published data from a variety of mental health publications which are published on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.

The majority of these publications use MHSDS data but some publications make use of data from other sources, for example from the Assuring Transformation collection, the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) or the Mental Health of Children and Young People Surveys.

Mental Health Bulletin

This publication series provides the most detailed picture available of people who used NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England during the financial year. Data is available from 2003 onwards.

Mental Health Act Statistics, Annual Figures

This publication series contains the official statistics about uses of the Mental Health Act in England during each year from 2016-17. This data is sourced primarily from MHSDS. Under the Act, people with a mental disorder may be formally detained in hospital (or 'sectioned') in the interests of their own health or safety, or for the protection of other people. They can also be treated in the community but subject to recall to hospital for assessment and/or treatment under a Community Treatment Order (CTO).

Inpatients formally detained in hospitals under the Mental Health Act 1983 and patients subject to Supervised Community Treatment

This publication series summarises information collected about uses of The Mental Health Act. Data is available from 1994-95 to 2014-15. This data is primarily sourced from the KP90 dataset. Under The Act, people with a mental disorder may formally be detained in hospital in the interests of their own health or safety, or can be treated in the community but subject to recall to hospital when necessary for assessment and/or treatment under a Community Treatment Order (sometimes referred to as 'Supervised Community Treatment' or 'SCT').

Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics

This publication series provides the timeliest picture available of people using NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. This data uses data from MHSDS and is available from January 2016 onwards.

Mental Health of Children and Young People Surveys

Mental health of children and young people in Great Britain (2004) and for England (2017 and 2020 follow up during in the pandemic).

Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey

The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) series provides data on the prevalence of both treated and untreated psychiatric disorder in the English adult population (aged 16 and over).

Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Statistics

This publication series presents data from the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Dataset (MHLDDS). The series presents a wide range of information about care delivered to users of NHS funded secondary mental health and learning disability services in England.

Monthly Mental Health Minimum Data Set Reports

This publication series makes available data from the Monthly Mental Health Minimum Data Set (MHMDS). The series presents a wide range of information about care delivered to users of NHS funded secondary mental health services in England.

Routine Quarterly Mental Health Minimum Data Set Reports

This publication series makes available data from the Monthly Mental Health Minimum Data Set (MHMDS). The MHMDS is a regular return of data generated by providers of adult secondary mental health services in England, in the course of delivering services to patients. Data is available from October 2009 to June 2013.

Learning Disabilities Census Report

The Learning Disability Census provides an individual record-level snapshot of inpatients with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder and/or behaviour that challenges, and the services they receive, for patients who were inpatients in NHS and independent sector services at midnight on 30 September of each of the three years (2013, 2014 and 2015).

Learning Disability Services Statistics

Latest monthly statistics on Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA) patients from the Assuring Transformation (AT) collection and Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS). Data on inpatients with learning disabilities and/or autism are being collected both within the AT collection and MHSDS. There are differences in the inpatient figures between the AT and MHSDS data sets and work has been ongoing to better understand these. LDA data from MHSDS are experimental statistics.

Autism Waiting Time Statistics

These statistics present a group of measures on waiting times for autism spectrum disorder diagnostic pathways, based on the time between a referral for suspected autism and the first care contact associated with that referral. There are also multiple breakdowns based on the progression and outcomes of those referrals. Each of these measures contributes to an overall picture of waiting times for diagnostic pathways. The approach is outlined in the methodology section of this publication.

Psychological Therapies, Reports on the use of IAPT services

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) is run by the NHS in England and offers NICE-approved therapies for treating people with depression or anxiety. This publication series makes available the most recent IAPT monthly data, including activity, waiting times, and outcomes such as recovery. It also includes experimental statistics from the Employment Advisor in IAPT pilot.

Psychological Therapies, Annual Reports on the use of IAPT services

The annual report on the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme contains similar analyses to the monthly and quarterly reports. In addition, it covers a range of demographic analyses including outcomes for patients of different ages, ethnic group and separately for ex-British Armed Forces personnel.
