Summary

Master134 is a malvertising campaign that uses compromised WordPress websites to distribute malware via drive-by downloads.

Threat details

The campaign has been able to compromise over 10,000 WordPress websites running version 4.7.1, which is vulnerable to a remote code execution attack. When users visit one of these websites, a jQuery request redirects them to JavaScript on a remote server. This redirects them to an exploit kit via a disreputable advertising network. The campaign has also used a potentially unwanted program to alter users' home pages to this redirection.

The campaign has employed exploit kits such as RIG to install a range of malware including botnets, trojans and ransomware. Users may also be redirected to tech support scams.

Remediation steps

Type Step

To prevent a website being compromised ensure that operating systems, security products, server applications, content management systems and plugins are kept up to date. Strong passwords should be used on all accounts and activity logs should be monitored.
