Summary

Vulnerabilities in Supermicro server products have been discovered in both older and newer models which can affect the systems firmware.

Threat details

The vulnerability is not in the firmware's code, but in the configuration in the motherboards accepting updates without secured authentication to the firmware’s image binary file. The products have an incorrectly set Descriptor Table that allows software running on the Operating System (OS) to modify the Descriptor Region. It can survive (OS) re-installs by hiding itself in the modified firmware,

This could enable any stealthy and persistent malware that can bypass security controls. It has also been noted that there is lack of anti-rollback protections for the firmware image.
