Summary

A new proof-of-concept tool has been released that claims to be able to remotely access thousands of digital video recorders (DVRs). getDVR (also known as getDVR_Credentials) exploits a vulnerability, CVE-2018-9995, in two series of DVRs produced by TBK Vision.

Threat details

The researcher who produced the proof-of-concept claims there are more than 55,000 vulnerable devices he was able to reach remotely when testing the exploit.

Remediation steps

Type Step
  • The proof-of-concept code uses two mock user-agents, Morzilla and Pinux x86_128 instead of Mozilla and Linux x86_128. These can be easily identified and blocked by monitoring solutions, however, it would be trivial for an attacker to alter these.
  • Use IP whitelisting to block access to device management interfaces and monitor attempts to access /login.rsp and /device.rsp URL paths.
