Threat details

This version steals users credentials and Two Factor Authentication codes (2FA) to gain access to bank accounts.

Typically Qadars is delivered through exploit kits that utilise PowerShell scripts to install the malware. Once the Qadars loader has been installed it performs an escalation process to escalate account privileges of the user’s device using techniques that bypass traditional measures.

In the event the required privileges are not granted the loader will communicate with its Command and Control Server and download a module that is subsequently loaded into memory and completes the escalation. If this attempt is unsuccessful it will attempt to socially engineer users into allowing higher level of access.

Once escalation has completed Qadars is executed by pretending to be the Adobe Updater application making it appear legitimate to the user. This will fully install the malware which has a directory of websites in which it will inject code when visiting. This is where the malware steals credentials and 2FA codes when the user inputs them at the targeted website.

Remediation steps

Type Step
  • To help detect possible generated domains for Qadars, use the regular expression: ([a-zA-Z0-9] {12}

    \.(com|org|net))

  • Monitor network and proxy logs for communications to C2 infrastructure.
  • Never open attachments or links in emails received from untrusted sources.
  • Ensure that the latest operating software patches are installed on devices.
