Tobacco Dependence Programme Patient Level Data Collection

Data Provision Notice to require the submission of data relating to tobacco dependence treatment services provided by NHS secondary care providers.

The NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) has set out a number of commitments towards the prevention of ill health, including the implementation of tobacco dependence treatment services.

To deliver these commitments, NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSEI) is investing £150m by 2023/24 through the LTP, specifically to roll out these services across inpatient, maternity and specialist mental health outpatient/community settings.

Patient level data provided through this collection will ensure that NHS England and NHS Improvement can not only demonstrate delivery of the tobacco LTP commitments but can influence service improvement.

In addition, patient level data is specifically required to enable the monitoring of:

  • the impact and clinical outcomes of tobacco dependence treatment services
  • the impact on reducing health inequalities.

This Notice is served on NHS secondary care organisations providing tobacco dependence treatment services, including but not limited to:

  • NHS acute trusts
  • NHS community trusts
  • NHS mental health trusts.

Legal basis

This is a monthly collection, starting in January 2022 with the collection of data for November 2021.

Thereafter, trusts will be required to submit data one month in arrears. The submission window will open at 8am on the 2nd working day of each month, closing at 5pm on the 15th working day of the month, with data submitted a month in arrears (e.g. April 2022 data submitted in June 2022).
