Self Care and Prevention (domain A)

Improved digital access to health and care information and transactions is essential to support people in making health and care choices.

The Self Care and Prevention domain are developing digital technologies that will put patients in charge of their own health and care, whilst reducing pressure on front-line NHS services.

The new tools and solutions we develop will help patients:

  • make informed decisions about their own healthcare
  • interact with and make choices about health and care services

Programmes under domain A

Citizen Identity

The aim of the Citizen Identity programme is to provide the public each with a single online identity that can be used to log into multiple online health and social care services. Citizen Identity is important in supporting infrastructure for many other Personalised Health and Care 2020 programmes and could be used by other NHS Digital national programmes, local initiatives, and other Government organisations.

NHS.UK

The transformation of the NHS Choices website to NHS.UK will change the service from one that just provides information on health conditions into one that offers a focused user journey supporting users through their health care information needs. NHS.UK will reduce some demands on NHS services by helping users to self-serve where appropriate and by linking users directly to NHS services at the right point in their user journey.

The NHS Apps Library

We're designing digital health tools and services that connect patients to health information, tools and services that help them access care in a familiar and convenient way.

The NHS Apps Library beta website gives patients access to a set of digital tools to help them organise and manage their own health and care.

We also have a mobile health beta site, available through developer.nhs.uk/, aimed at the talented and creative developer market. This is an exciting space that mobile health developers can use to create digital products that offer valuable healthcare benefits to patients.

Widening Digital Participation

The Widening Digital Participation programme was set up to help the millions of people who lack the confidence and skills to access and use digital health services and information and benefit from their convenience.

Personal health record

Personal Health Records will bring together information and enable interaction between the citizen health and the health and care system domains. This creates an opportunity for the health and care system to engage with citizens in innovative ways that can support new methods of care and self-care.

NHS WiFi

The NHS WiFi programme is rolling out WiFi access for staff and patients across NHS providers. WiFi will allow patients, visitors, and staff to connect to the internet using their digital devices, including computers, tablets, and smart phones.

Widening Digital Participation

The Widening Digital Participation programme was set up to help the millions of people who lack the confidence and skills to access and use digital health services and information and benefit from their convenience.

NHS WiFi

NHS WiFi will give staff and patients access to WiFi in NHS settings in England.
