Self Care and Prevention (domain A)

Improved digital access to health and care information and transactions is essential to support people in making health and care choices.

We are developing digital technologies that put people in charge of their own health and care, whilst reducing pressure on front-line NHS services. Our new tools and services will help people:

  • make informed decisions about their own healthcare
  • interact with and make choices about health and care services

Programmes under domain A

Citizen Identity

We are developing a single, easy to use system for verifying the identity of those requesting access to digital health records and services, so that we can ensure people only access information about themselves and those they care for. Citizen Identity is important in supporting infrastructure for many other Personalised Health and Care 2020 programmes and could be used by other NHS Digital national programmes, local initiatives, and other government organisations.

NHS website (NHS.UK)

We are transforming the NHS Choices website from a service that provides information on health conditions into one that offers a focused user journey supporting people through their health and care needs. The new NHS website will help to reduce demand on NHS services by empowering people to take more control of their health and wellbeing, connecting them to NHS services so that they get the right care, in the right place, at the right time. A Personal Health Record (PHR) is a personal digital space for health and care that enables members of the public to take greater control of their health by accessing a range of information.

NHS WiFi

The NHS WiFi programme is rolling out WiFi access for staff and patients across NHS providers. WiFi will allow patients, visitors, and staff to connect to the internet using their digital devices, including computers, tablets, and smart phones.
