Calculate SCR use for community pharmacy quality payments

Because of its benefits, the use of Summary Care Records is now taken into account when funding for community pharmacies is awarded. Part of the funding for pharmacies in the financial year 2017-18 will be awarded through the new Quality Payments scheme, which assesses each eligible pharmacy against quality criteria and awards points for each one fulfilled. Use of the Summary Care Record accounts for 10 per cent of these points over the year - so it could be worth up to £1,280 to your pharmacy.

The Summary Care Record quality criterion

The quality payment for SCR use can be claimed at two review points during the year. At each review point, a pharmacy can claim 5 points if they can demonstrate an increase in use of SCR by comparing access figures from two different time periods. At the second review point, they can also claim if they can demonstrate that they have used SCR more than 100 times in both periods, even if there was no increase in use between the two periods.

Review point 1: 28 April 2017

Pharmacies must show they have used SCR on at least one more separate occasion during period 2, Monday 28 November 2016 to Sunday 30 April 2017, than during period 1, Monday 27 June 2016 to Sunday 27 November 2016.

Review point 2: 26 November 2017

Pharmacies who have used SCR less than 100 times in periods 1 and 2 must show they have used SCR on at least one more separate occasion during period 2, Monday 1 May 2017 to Sunday 26 November 2017, than during period 1, Monday 3 October 2016 to Sunday 30 April 2017.

Where a pharmacy has used SCR 100 times or more in both period 1 and period 2, they will not need to demonstrate an increase in access. This recognises pharmacies who are consistently accessing the SCR to support patient care.

SCR in community pharmacy usage calculator

If you are a pharmacy contractor, you can use the icon SCR usage calculator tool [1.66MB] to check your pharmacy's SCR viewing figures. You can use these to check how your pharmacy is doing and to complete your quality payments return. NHS England will accept an increase from period 1 to period 2 shown in this calculator as evidence of meeting this quality criterion when you fill in the NHS Business Services Authority online declaration.

To use the calculator:

If you need to find out your ODS/F code or view more specific information on recorded uses of SCR in your pharmacy, you can search in the analysis or viewing data tabs.

The calculator tool is updated every Thursday to show the latest figures. This version shows data up to 26 November 2017. This version of the calculator is the one you should use when you record your SCR viewing figures in your quality payments return, as it contains data up to review point 2.

The icon Final SCR usage calculator for review point 1 [1.36MB] is available for reference.
