Update Your Contact Details Service

The Update Your Contact Details Service aims to improve the data quality of email addresses and mobile numbers held in the Personal Demographic Service (PDS).

Overview

The service will:

  • identify people with a record in the PDS where either the email address or mobile number is missing, malformed or different to that provided to another NHS service
  • alert the person to ask them to update their contact information, either via NHS login or the NHS App

An initial pilot scheme is running with a number of the people with these issues. They will receive a text message or email advising them of the need to update their NHS record, and how they can update their contact information themselves.

There will be 2 options available for people to use to update their contact details.

NHS login

The patient follows the link embedded within the notification they have received which asks them to login/register and then update their personal details using their NHS login settings.

NHS App

This option involves downloading the NHS App (if not already downloaded) and logging into the system, from the homepage the patient can navigate to the correct section and update their personal contact information. Read guidance on changing phone numbers or email addresses in the NHS App.

Benefits

The aim of the Update Your Contact Details Service pilot is to give patients some ownership of their contact information stored in PDS. Enabling patients to update their contact details when required will provide a more reliable and up to date source of information for the NHS.

As a result of the initiative, health care professionals will be able to access more up-to-date email addresses and mobile phone numbers from PDS.

In the longer term, this has the potential to reduce the number of missed appointments across healthcare settings with reminders and referrals more likely to reach the person they are meant for in a timely and low-cost way.

Processing patient data

Data processing is covered and described in the PDS Fair Processing Notice, under the Purpose and Sharing Section.
