Paid placement options
We're introducing three types of paid placement for data science.
Summer internships
Students will be able to join us in one of our offices for 8-12 weeks over the summer, to support work within specific statistical areas.
Placement year
Traditionally, students do a 'year in industry' after they have completed their second year at university. In September 2018 we will begin promoting the opportunity to do a placement with us in one of our offices.
Short-term projects
We are looking to invite PhD students in relevant clinical areas to explore our data and offer insights into how we can use it more innovatively. Students taking part will work up to 16 hours a week.
Improving patient care
Jill Clarkson, Project Manager at NHS Digital, explains:
'We've identified three areas to focus on to improve patient care: data science, digital delivery and software development. We feel we can make a real impact in these areas by combining student talent with the skills of our staff.
We've been supporting internships and apprenticeships for some time, but we're introducing a more strategic approach to our engagement work with students and their universities.'
Inviting new perspectives
Andrew Heggs, head of profession for data management, has been on the road talking to universities about potential data science work placements:
'We're not just inviting students to come in and process data. We're asking them to bring a new perspective that helps us to innovate and ultimately deliver better outcomes for patients. There is a great deal of enthusiasm within the academic community for our data and we're keen to understand how we can support researchers to make the most of it.'
