How to integrate with the NHS App

Guidance, process and supporting information for digital health and social care services that are interested in integrating into the NHS App.

NHS login integration

You need to carry out an NHS login integration before going live with an NHS App integration. NHS login allows users access the NHS App using their NHS login account details.

NHS App integration functionality

Direct NHS App integrations

Direct NHS App integrations can include services provided to primary or secondary care. They can also be local or national services. Currently we are integrating online consultation services and personal care records and plans. This is delivered using a NHS App web integration.

Online consultation integrations allow users to submit medical or admin queries to their GP surgery. Users can do this through an online questionnaire. This will then allow an appropriate member of their GP surgery to triage the request and decide on the best next steps for the user. For example, offering an appointment or responding with the requested document.

We are currently interested in suppliers that:

  • provide automated or manual form-based triage for patients providing either of these services
  • describe medical symptoms and request medical help from their practice
  • to undertake administrative tasks (such as request test results, repeat prescriptions and fit notes)
  • are commissioned by the NHS via an NHS England recognised framework
  • can integrate via a web based user-interface

Personal care record/care plan integrations let users do specific tasks and manage their own health and care. It can include access to messages, letters, test results and care plans. It may also allow users to upload their own information. This can be for primary and secondary care. They are local integrations.

We are currently interested in suppliers that:

  • provide Shared Care Record systems that have the potential to offered a broad range of Personal Healthcare Record access to patients
  • are commissioned by the NHS via an NHS England recognised framework
  • can integrate via a web based user-interface or have an existing integration to the patient care aggregator

Integrating Notifications and Messaging (N&M)

An N&M NHS App integration allows you to send messages to patients through the NHS App. If the user has notifications enabled they will receive notifications with any messages. For certain message types it can support keyword and free text replies from patients.

If you provide primary care or national services and you want to send notifications and messages through the NHS App then you will need to onboard through NHS Notify.

If you provide secondary care services and you want to send notifications and messages through the NHS App then currently you will need to integrate through the NHS App API and meet the N&M supplier requirements. For secondary care message integrations, you are also required to engage with the patient care aggregator.

Integrating a secondary care booking system with the Patient Care Aggregator

A patient care aggregator integration, also known as a Wayfinder integration is for secondary care services. It allows your service to represent at least one acute NHS trust that handles outpatient appointments in England. Patients can view and manage their appointment, referrals and test results on the NHS App. It also enables secondary care providers to view which patients have bookings. Review the guide to integrate a secondary care booking system.

Standards for NHS App integration

To integrate into the NHS App you must agree to meet the NHS App standards for integration. These standards are for accessibility, usability, clinical safety and data privacy. You cannot integrate with the NHS App if you do not meet these standards.

NHS App integrated partners and services

We are continuously integrating new partners into the NHS App. This increases the use of the NHS App across the digital health and social care market. We are keen to integrate services that support the delivery of the NHS England strategic roadmap for future developments of the NHS App.
