Online access to GP records patient case studies: Yusuf's story

Find out how the NHS App helps Yusuf make decisions about his health with his GP.

Yusuf's story

Yusuf, 44, lives in West Yorkshire. He has several long-term health conditions including depression and anxiety, asthma, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. He is also a carer for his 73 year old mother who has type 1 diabetes type, blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis and glaucoma.

“I use the NHS App to check my prescriptions, view test results, track vaccinations, message my GP and manage my appointments. It reduces stress, saves me time and the need to contact the GP surgery to get information.”

More knowledge equals more confidence

I  use the app to check the information in my GP health record at my own pace when preparing for hospital appointments. I feel more informed about the management of my health conditions since downloading the app. It’s given me more confidence to ask for what I need and make decisions together with my GP and other health professionals.

It's given me quite in-depth knowledge of all my different medical conditions. I’ve become quite independent, more confident. I can go to hospital and just show them this app and they can see all my details. Having all this information on hand is great, practical and helpful for my mental health.

Supporting loved ones

Yusuf has carer permissions on the NHS App to see his Mum’s GP health records, order her prescriptions and book the GP appointments she needs. He’s also helped his sister and friends to use the app.

“It’s allowed me to be a carer in my community and my family.”
