GP Connect

GP Connect allows authorised clinical staff to share and view GP practice clinical information and data between IT systems, quickly and efficiently.

The service makes patient medical information available to all appropriate clinicians when and where they need it to support direct patient care, leading to improvements in both care and outcomes.

GP practices need to configure their systems so that the Covid Clinical Assessment Service (CCAS) can book appointments where this is clinically appropriate. Find out what guidance and support is available.

We're helping primary care organisations share appointments with the CCAS, Extended Access Hubs and NHS 111 to meet targets set out in the GMS contract around direct booking.

97% of GP practices in England can now use:

  • Access Record: HTML which allows clinicians to view a read-only version of the patient’s detailed GP practice record
  • Appointment Management which allows organisations to share and manage their appointments to support joined up patient care

We’re also seeing the benefits of the service in secondary care where access to a patient’s GP records is helping clinicians improve decisions and save time. Find out more about GP Connect progress.

We’re getting ready to deliver the following additional functionality across all GP clinical systems:

  • the capacity to import or download data on a patient’s medicines and allergies with Access Record: Structured
  • Send Document allows systems to automatically send a consultation summary back to the patient’s registered practice in the form of a PDF document, detailing the consultation and actions taken.

These products will save time for clinicians, and provide better, more convenient care for patients. It will also help meet targets under NHS England’s Improving Access to General Practice programme.

The programme is supporting Extended Access Providers, the creation of Primary Care Networks and the Local Health Care Record Exemplar approaches highlighted in the NHS Long Term Plan.

You can see a GP Connect consumer system demonstrator that shows what GP Connect looks like when integrated with an electronic patient record (EPR) or Trust portal system.

The programme team is now looking at how we can extend our current products and introduce additional services to better meet the interoperability needs of health and care organisations. Find out more about our future developments.

17 December 2020 - Changes to the Emergency codes section in GP Connect Access Record: HTML

Changes to ensure accurate information recording on patients records are being made on GP Connect Access Record: HTML

Earlier this year, to help users of GP Connect Access Record: HTML quickly identify COVID19 related information on a patient record, we introduced an ‘Emergency codes’ section on the Summary view. This ‘Emergency codes’ section brought together coded information relating to COVID19 which would otherwise appear across a number of the views and be interspersed with other records.

Since the introduction of this ‘Emergency codes’ section the NHS has come a long way in fighting COVID19 so new clinical codes are needed to ensure accurate recording of information on patient records. A recent example is the administration of COVID19 vaccinations.

This week, TPP made a change to include the latest set of COVID19 codes in the ‘Emergency codes’ section. These will now appear whenever recorded in the patient’s record. EMIS will be making the same change in the new year with the date to be confirmed.

Vision and Eva Health do not currently display the ‘Emergency codes’ section of the Summary view but for those accessing these systems in the limited FOT capacity the codes will be available in the relevant section of the HTML view.

Users of Access Record: HTML are advised not to rely solely on the ‘Emergency codes’ section, or indeed the Summary view, and should consult all relevant sections of the HTML view when providing care.

There’s no requirement for existing consumers of Access Record HTML to uplift as this is primarily a reference set update and does not require a specification change.
