Electronic Prescription Service – non-nominated prescriptions

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) non-nominated prescriptions has enabled EPS to become the default for prescribing, dispensing and reimbursement of prescriptions in primary care in England.

SCAL notice for suppliers

Please refer to the Supplier Conformance Assessment List (SCAL) as the definitive source of supplier information and guidance for EPS development. You will receive the SCAL when you begin the EPS onboarding process.

EPS allows prescribers to send prescriptions electronically to a dispenser of the patient's choice - known as their nominated dispenser.

Patients without an EPS nomination may be given a token to present to a dispenser of their choice, or they may use the NHS App to provide the same information. The Prescription ID may be found in the 'approved prescriptions' area of patient's NHS App. Tokens contain a unique barcode that can be scanned by the dispenser to download the prescription from the NHS Spine to retrieve the medication details.

Paper prescriptions may be issued in special circumstances, but almost all prescriptions can be processed electronically.

Alternatively, patients may present the dispenser with the unique EPS barcode via the NHS App. This can be scanned in the same way as the barcode on a token.
