Staff at Living Care Pharmacy in Moortown, Leeds

Living Care Pharmacy in Moortown, Leeds is part of a small independent chain with a number of regular elderly patients. They have been successfully using the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) since their lead GP practice went live in November 2014.

Embracing the EPS

Pharmacist Dr. Jane Wilkins and her team have changed their day to day routine in order to fully embrace the EPS service. Here’s what Jane has to say about EPS:

All members of staff know how to use our dispensing system and all follow the company's standard operating procedures to ensure that they are all working in a uniform way.
Kim is the branch EPS champion and staff will often go to her for guidance. If she doesn’t know the answers, then she will contact our system supplier for help.

Jane regularly arranges GP meetings and often helps the staff with any problems they may have. She believes that the communication between them is really good and this helps the whole process and results in happy patients - which is the main goal.

Jane summed it up by saying:

It took a bit of time to get used to EPS, but now it’s just everyday life for us. Things change and its important to realise that pharmacy is changing too. Everything will go electronic one day and its better to start now rather than later.
Top tips
  • Put nominations straight on the system
  • Keep plenty of dispensing tokens in stock
  • Regularly download from the Spine
  • Communicate with your GP practices
  • Advise patients about the service
  • Attend training sessions

Dr Jane Wilkins, the pharmacy manager, told us how the company had prepared for EPS many years ago and now that their GP practices are going live with EPS, they are changing their day to day routine and working practices.

They made sure to:

  • educate all members of staff and patients about the service
  • prepare by gathering nominations and ordering tokens
  • set up regular meetings with GPs and communicate

Views from the team

“We gathered nominations while advising our patients about the service and giving them a leaflet to provide them with more information.”

Sharn

“I regularly meet with the GPs and we help each other out, communicating really helps the whole process, which means we have happy patients.”

Jane

“We all know how to use the system, but staff will come to me for help if needed. I also log any IT issues straight away and let the GP practices know if there is an issue.”

Kim
