Published: 12 April 2017 - The Innovation Scorecard reports on the use of medicines and medical technologies in the NHS in England, which have been positively appraised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) since 2012. NHS Digital has produced and published the Innovation Scorecard quarterly as an Official Statistic since January 2013 on behalf of the Office of Life Sciences. It can be used by local NHS organisations to monitor progress in implementing NICE Technology Appraisal (TA) recommendations. We produce the scorecard using a range of data sources from two to five years prior to publication and no central data collection is involved. Following an initial release of a web platform tool in January 2017, this publication sees the full release of the new tool. This new tool has been developed in response to a user consultation undertaken in early 2016 specifically to enhance user experience in accessing the data, making it easier for commissioners and users

The Innovation Scorecard shows the use of medicines and medical technologies by primary and secondary care providers in England that have received positive NICE technology appraisals for use in the NHS since 2011. £ HSCIC produces the Innovations Scorecard quarterly for the Office of Life Sciences. It can be used by local NHS organisations to monitor progress in implementing National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Technology Appraisal recommendations. £ We produce the scorecard using a range of data sources from two years prior to publication and no central data collection is involved. The scorecard is published every three months and was first produced in January 2013.

The objective of the Innovation Scorecard is to support appropriate access to NICE approved products (medicines, devices and diagnostics), by giving health and care commissioners and professionals information they can use to identify and act on unwarranted variation in patient access to these treatments. The Scorecard does this by transparently providing access to data, which can be used alongside a range of other data sources (including patient population outcomes) to measure progress in access to NICE approved products within local areas or at a national level. It is not intended to be used for performance management. The Innovation Health and Wealth Strategy set out plans to support development and adoption of innovation in the NHS. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) technology appraisal process assesses the clinical and cost effectiveness of new and existing medicines and treatments, and provides guidance on their use by the NHS.
