Pathology Messaging

Pathology Messaging supports electronic communications between laboratories and General Practice.

Pathology standards
Pathology Messaging Implementation Programme (PMIP) standards define the content, structure and management of electronic pathology reports between laboratories and General Practice.

National Messaging Assurance Service
All NHS Trusts providing a pathology service for Haematology, Biochemistry or Microbiology, are required to implement pathology messaging that meet PMIP standards. The National Messaging Assurance Service (NMAS) allows Trusts to assess their implementation of pathology report messaging against these standards.

Pathology Bounded Code List
The Pathology bounded Code List (PBCL) provides a defined set of codes for use in laboratory to GP messaging.

National Laboratory Medicine Catalogue

The National Laboratory Medicine Catalogue (NLMC) is a list of pathology tests that have been approved for use within the NHS.

Each item in the list is given a code based on a number of core attributes that make each definition unique. This increases the accuracy and suitability of tests being ordered and means that hospital doctors, GPs, nurses and other health professionals can be certain they are requesting the right test every time.
