Figures released for numbers of GP surgery openings and closures or mergers

14 July 2017: A supplementary report has been published on the number of practices that have opened, closed or merged² in England between 1 July 2016 and 30 June 2017, as part of a regular publication series.

It shows the numbers of practices that have opened in all four regions of North England, Midlands and East England, South England, and London and compares it to the numbers that have either closed or merged over the same time.

It also details the number of CCGs that had no practice closures or mergers over the year.

The data have been analysed as part of the Number of Patients Registered at a GP Practice publication that details the numbers of patients at each practice, and is an extract of the GP Payments System.

Number of Patients Registered at a GP Practice is published monthly and will include special analysis on a topic of interest on a quarterly basis.

2. The data do not differentiate between surgeries closed and those that have merged with other surgeries over the year, as in the case of a practice merging, the patients would not need to re-register.
