NHS Digital cyber team wins prestigious data security award

NHS Digital has won the Data and Information Security Award at the Public Sector Paperless Awards for the Data and Security Protection Toolkit (DSPT).

The DSPT is an online self-assessment portal that allows health and care organisations to measure and publish their performance against the National Data Guardian’s 10 data security standards, providing organisations with way to assess their data security capability and track compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other requirements.

Alan Morton, Head of Business Intelligence and Risk for the Data Security Centre at NHS Digital, said

“I’m delighted that the hard work of the DSPT team has been recognised.

“They have created an easy, straightforward digital way for organisations across health and care to evidence how well they handle and secure personal information, and they should be very proud of themselves with this recognition.”

Notes to editors

  1. Since the new system was launched in April 2018, over 30,000 health and care organisations have registered on the toolkit and 26,800 organisations have published an assessment against the NDG Standards.  Despite this being the first year of a new, higher standard, the number of assessments is up 18% when compared with the predecessor IG Toolkit.  This will have a positive impact on data security across health and care.

NHS Digital is the national information and technology partner of the health and care system.  Our team of information analysis, technology and project management experts create, deliver and manage the crucial digital systems, services, products and standards upon which health and care professionals depend.  Our vision is to harness the power of information and technology to make health and care better.
