Local demographic statistics on NHS Health Checks2 attended in England between April 2012 and March 2018 has been published for the first time today.
90% of GP practices in England are captured in the dataset, which shows the number of patients recorded as having completed an NHS Health Check rose from 734,0003 in 2012-134 to 1,109,000 in 2017-185 – peaking at 1,161,000 in 2015-16.
Of those recorded as completing an NHS Health Check in 2017-18, 54.0% were female and 46.0% were male.
NHS Health Check Programme, Patients Recorded as Attending and Not Attending, 2012-13 to 2017-186 has been published as part of a collaborative project between NHS Digital and Public Health England.7
The NHS Health Check is a prevention programme delivered across England, which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of over 15 million adults aged 40-74 years who do not already have a cardiovascular health condition.
In 2017-18, 1,595,000 were recorded as having not attended their check – with 1,529,000 patients not responding, 57,000 patients declining the invitation, 7,000 not attending and 2,000 commencing but not completing their check.
Of the 1,595,000 patients who did not attend, 52.1% of patients were male and 47.9% were female.
65-69-year-olds had the highest attendance rate with 54.5% of those invited in 2017-18 (126,000) recorded as having attended their check.
40-44-year-olds had the lowest attendance rate with 35.9% of those invited in 2017-18 (240,000) recorded as having attended their check.
The number of Asian or Asian British patients recorded as having attended their check rose from 48,000 in 2012-13 (6.5% of the total patients attending) to 99,000 in 2017-18 (8.9% of the total patients attending).
The number of Black or African or Caribbean or Black British patients recorded as having attended their check rose from 24,000 in 2012-13 (3.3% of the total patients attending) to 46,000 in 2017-18 (4.1% of the total patients attending).
