NHS Digital welcomes three new, non-executive directors

John Noble, Deborah Oakley and Balram Veliath joined the Board at NHS Digital on 1 July 2018, bringing their expertise to the leadership of the organisation.

NHS Digital welcomes the arrival of three new non-executive directors who will help to shape the governance of the organisation.

John Noble has come to the organisation following his retirement from the security services, where he has led major operational and strategic change programmes, most pertinently in the field of enhancing the UK’s cyber resilience infrastructure.

Deborah Oakley is a long-standing member on the Board of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), a position she has held since 2012 and from which she shall shortly retire.  She has also chaired the Biological Medicines Technical Committee at the Health Protection Agency and the Audit Committee of NHS Camden PCT.  Prior to this, she enjoyed a career at Newton Investment Management spanning 20 years.

Balram Veliath is currently the Director of Quality, Risk and Assurance at the BBC, a role which includes oversight of ethics, culture, conduct and transparency.  He has previously been a partner at KPMG, Executive Vice President at ABN Amro and Head of Controls for the Services division at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Noel Gordon, Chair of NHS Digital, said: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome John, Deborah and Balram to our Board at NHS Digital.

“They bring with them huge depths of expertise and impressive track records in their fields which will help us continue to build on the strength, diversity and competence around our Board table.

“Our stewardship responsibility to both NHS Digital and to the wider NHS means we should always aspire to be well led and to create the high performance team our organisation deserves.

“We have been very lucky to attract such distinguished experts to our Board and I have every confidence we will greatly benefit from the skills they bring to us.”
