NHS Digital has today published its biannual report on the healthcare workforce across primary and secondary care as well as the independent sector.

The Healthcare Workforce Statistics provides a biannual snapshot of the number of healthcare staff working across the sector in England.

This includes:

• Hospital and Community Health Services (HCHS)

• General Practice

• Independent Healthcare Providers (IHP)

Figures are broken down by headcount and full-time equivalent (FTE)1.

The Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) workforce includes staff working in core NHS organisations (NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups) and wider NHS organisations (Central Bodies and Support Organisations)2.

The General Practice workforce includes staff working in General Practices contracted to the NHS in England.

The Independent Healthcare Provider (IHP) workforce includes staff directly employed in a range of Independent Healthcare organisations in England. It does not represent the entire workforce employed across this sector and does not only count the staff providing NHS commissioned services3.
