Annual statistics on the earnings and expenses of GPs and dentists have been published today by NHS Digital.

Dental Earnings and Expenses Estimates 2019/20 provides a detailed study of the earnings and expenses1 of self-employed full-time and part-time primary care dentists who carried out some NHS/Health Service work during that financial year.

Figures are reported separately for each of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland2.

The GP Earnings and Expenses Estimates 2019/20 reports on full and part-time GPs working in the UK as either a contractor or salaried GP during the 2019/20 financial year under a General Medical Services (GMS) or Personal Medical Services (PMS) contract. This report covers both their NHS and private income.

The report publishes data from across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Notes for editors

  1. The earnings and expenses estimates publications both publish figures for dentists or GPs in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland separately

  2. We do not make UK-level comparisons due to varying contractual arrangements that make such comparisons inappropriate and unreliable

  3. Both reports provide figures for full and part-time workers and we cannot break the earnings down into full-time or part-time

  4. Both reports include private and NHS income due to the data source which is self-assessment tax returns submitted to HMRC

  5. Figures are estimates weighted to the full population
