HL7  is an international standards framework that leverages the latest web standards and applies a tight focus on implementation and interoperability in healthcare. The latest international standard developed by HL7 is Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) which are essentially a set of basic building blocks for APIs, documents and structured messages between systems.

As part of INTEROPen, HL7 UK and the FHIR community, NHS Digital helped to deliver a HL7 UK / INTEROPen FHIR approach called ‘Care Connect’ which was England-centric. These profiles were established in May 2017 in STU3 and published in November 2018. With the adoption of HL7 FHIR there is now an opportunity to create a unified approach to interoperability across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – FHIR UK Core. This will enable consistent information flows across borders to improve health and care outcomes for all citizens.

These awareness days are free to attend for those in roles who want to learn about the FHIR UK Core and it will help them with their FHIR implementations.

During the workshop you will:

  • find out more about who HL7UK are and what they do
  • get an introduction to what FHIR is
  • learn about the FHIR UK Core
  • hear from the Ministry of Defence as to how they are planning to use FHIR
  • be walked through a practical exercise using the UK Core to create and validate a message instance.

This event is one of three FHIR events which are also taking place in Leeds and London
