National Diabetes Transition Audit

The National Diabetes Transition Audit (NDTA) is a joint enterprise between the National Diabetes Audit (NDA) and the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA).

This audit is part of the National Diabetes Audit Programme.

The NDA and NPDA datasets are being linked so that the care of young people with diabetes can be tracked during the transition from paediatric diabetes services to adult diabetes services. The audit measures against the National Service Framework and NICE Clinical Guidelines and Quality Standards.

The National Diabetes Audit Transition report was published on 23 June 2017.

The report has been developed from the linked data sets of the NDA and NPDA and presents the key findings and recommendations on care processes and treatment target achievement rates from 2003-04 - 2014-15 in age groups of 12 - 24 years in England and Wales.

The audit seeks to answer

  1. Is the transition from paediatric to adult care associated with changes in care process completion rates?
  2. Is the transition from paediatric to adult care associated with a change in treatment target achievements (specifically HbA1c)?
  3. Is the transition from paediatric to adult care associated with changes in the frequency of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)?

Data analysis

The NDTA is a new audit, and this is the first year that the NDA and NPDA have performed this data linkage. Records will include adolescents (aged 12) and young adults up to the age of 24 with Type 1 diabetes. The NDTA will initially analyse data over ten years from 2003/2004 to 2013/2014. The NDA and NPDA have permissions granted by the Secretary of State on advice of the Confidentiality Advisory Group to link the datasets (Section 251 approval).

No extra data is required from hospitals or GP practices for the NDTA. If your service is eligible and submitted data for the NDA or NPDA between the years 2003 to 2014 then your patients and your service will automatically be included in NDTA. The first report for NDTA was published on 23 June 2017.
