Weekly utilisation reports
Download NHS e-Referral Service (eRS) utilisation reports, which contain the estimated percentage utilisation.
About this data
To calculate the utilisation percentage we need both:
- a numerator - this is the number of eRS referrals generated by referrers
- a denominator - this is the total of paper referrals plus referrals generated by referrers
The numerator is derived direct from eRS and is defined as the initial booking of a referral, excluding re-bookings.
The denominator is more difficult. The only dataset that exists nationally is the Monthly Activity Returns (MAR) from hospitals. This only covers first outpatients, so utilisation calculations are limited to first outpatient referrals. MAR data does not contain GP practice level information, therefore GP practice level utilisation cannot be calculated and included in this report.
The MAR data is approximately 6 to 8 weeks in arrears, including processing (to remove referrals, such as MOD and dental) and is our definitive dataset for percentage utilisation.
For an up-to-date estimation of first outpatient utilisation, historic MAR data is used to predict activity prior to the MAR data being available. This is the data that we use in the reports. Therefore, this is an estimation of activity and not actual activity, and there will be some variation from when the actual MAR data is available.
