NHS Sickness Absence Rates, October 2022

This report shows monthly sickness absence rates of NHS Hospital and Community Health Services (HCHS) staff working in NHS Trusts and other core organisations and NHS Support Organisations and Central Bodies. Data is presented by NHS England region, ICS area, organisation, organisation type, staff group and reason for sickness absence.

NHS Absence rates in October 2022

The overall sickness absence rate for England was 5.6%. This is slightly higher than September 2022 (5.0%) and is slightly lower than October 2021 (5.7%).

Regional and organisational type variation

The North West region reported the highest sickness absence rate in October 2022 at 6.5%, this is higher than their rate in September 2022 (5.8%). The London region reported the lowest sickness absence rate in October 2022 at 4.8%, which is slightly higher than September 2022 (4.4%).

Ambulance Trusts had the highest sickness absence rate at 7.9% in October 2022, increasing slightly since September 2022 (7.5%). Integrated Care Boards had the lowest sickness absence rate at 3.1%.

Staff group differences

Support to ambulance staff reported the highest sickness absence rate in October 2022 at 9.5%, increasing since September 2022 (8.8%).

Consultants reported the lowest rate at 1.8% in October 2022, increasing slightly since September 2022 (1.6%).

Reason for sickness absence

Anxiety/stress/depression/other psychiatric illnesses is consistently the most reported reason for sickness absence, accounting for over 520,460 full time equivalent days lost and 22.4% of all sickness absence in October 2022. This has decreased slightly since September 2022 (24.9%).
