Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry - January to December 2021, Management Information

Summary

The Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry (BCIR) records the details of any individual who has breast implant surgery, so that they can be traced in the event of a product recall or other safety concern relating to a specific type of implant. Data collection started in England in late 2016, in Scotland in 2019 and in Northern Ireland in 2021.

The purpose of this report is to provide information on the uptake of the registry. It does not provide a comprehensive view of the number of breast implant operations undertaken. It provides an overview of the data collected between January and December 2021 and includes some historical data from the start of the registry in 2016 to 2021. Information in this report represents data that was extracted from the registry on 01 April 2022.

Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the registry

Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the registry

There has been increased pressure on medical services due to coronavirus (COVID-19). This affected the capacity of surgery providers to undertake elective operations in 2020, and may have affected elective operations in 2021. More information on the effects of COVID-19 on BCIR is available later in this report.

These pages will be updated with 2021 case ascertainment figures later in 2022.

Further information on how the registry collects data, and what it does with it, can be found in the related links section below.

Key Facts

BCIR Patients: England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, January to December 2021

In 2021, 17,775 patients underwent 18,130 operations submitted by 285 organisations (NHS and independent providers)

The number of operations is greater than the number of patients as a person may have had more than 1 operation. Patient and operation values between 1 and 7 are rounded to 5 - all other values are rounded to the nearest 5.

BCIR Data Collection: 2017 to 2021

Since January 2017, BCIR data has been submitted by 354 organisations in England, 18 in Scotland, and 1 in Northern Ireland.

Although the registry opened in England in October 2016, data collection was not fully implemented until 2017.
