This report details results from collaborative work undertaken by NHS Digital and NHS Improvement collecting pilot data on acute patient-level activity and costing. It describes how this data has been linked with activity reported within HES, which will allow richer analysis and cost of care activity in the future. This report is based on data relating to costing and activity that occurred in 2016-17 reported to the Patient-Level Information and Costing Systems (PLICS) data collection.

Through this analysis, both providers and commissioners of NHS services will gain a greater understanding of how acute patient-level activity and costing is being implemented. This will assist ongoing work to improve data quality both in coverage and consistency in reporting similar activity of this data for future collection pilots and beyond.
