Provisional Monthly Hospital Episode Statistics for Admitted Patient Care and Outpatient data April 2020 - September 2020

Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) is a data warehouse containing records of all patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. It contains details of inpatient care and outpatient appointments. This release no longer contains data from the HES Accident and Emergency data set, as from April 2020 data, all accident and emergency data will be sourced from the Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS). Hospital episode statistics (HES) statistics are produced and published on a monthly basis. This data is provisional and should therefore be treated as an estimate until the final National Statistics annual publications.
Monthly HES Data for Admitted Patient Care
In the year from October 2019 to September 20200 there were:
• 17.7 million finished consultant episodes (FCEs), 56.1% (9.9 million) of which included at least one procedure or intervention, and 5.6 million of which were day cases.
• 14.3 million finished admission episodes (FAEs), of which 5.9 million were emergency admissions.
Monthly HES data for Outpatients
In the year from October 2019 to September 2020 there were:
• 108.2 million outpatient appointments made, with 82.2 million (76.0%) of these attended by the patient.
• 6.1 million outpatient appointments not attended by the patient, representing 5.7% of all appointments.
We have replaced the reports and data files with an interactive dashboard that provides the same information as those previous reports, with the flexibility to introduce further breakdowns of the data in future releases. We will update this dashboard each month and will build the granularity and potential for insight in subsequent releases, so would welcome your feedback in doing this. We have also introduced a new report into the monthly HES publication as detailed below;
In 2018 a consultation took place to seek feedback from users regarding a proposal to terminate an existing NHS England and Improvement collection - the Quarterly Activity return (QAR), and significantly reduce the scope of another collection - the Monthly Activity Return (MAR) to reduce the NHS data collection burden. Responses to the consultation have been reviewed and a decision made to stop QAR and reduce MAR to referrals information only and will therefore be re-named the Monthly Referrals Return (MRR). The HES Monthly Activity Report (HES MAR) replaces the Monthly (MAR) and Quarterly (QAR) Activity Returns that were collected by NHS England until May 2020. The MAR and QAR returns were aggregate collections that were collected and published at provider and commissioner level. The HES MAR report produces counts of equivalent measures from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Data Set.

Data within the HES MAR has been updated following a small error in the extraction of the data from HES where all measures had been limited to only consultant activity and thus were giving an under count of activity. This has affected the Admitted Patient Care measures for all specialties and specific acute, it has also impacted all specialties Outpatient measures. All data has now been updated and the comparisons file has also been reissued, please accept our apologies for this error.
The Provisional Data Quality Report for Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS) is no longer included within this release. It is now available by using the link in the Related Links Section below.
Also included within this release is supplementary analysis that has been produced in addition to the Retrospective Review of Surgery for Urogynaecological Prolapse and Stress Urinary Incontinence using Tape or Mesh: Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), Experimental Statistics, April 2008 - March 2017. It contains a count of Finished Consultant Episodes (FCEs) where a procedure for urogynaecological prolapse or stress urinary incontinence using tape or mesh has been recorded during the April 2020 to September 2020 period.
Also included within this release is supplementary analysis that has been produced to in addition to the Retrospective Review for Earliest Clinically Appropriate Date wider goals of the Ophthalmology transformation program. It contains a count of Outpatient appointments where the Earliest Clinically Appropriate Date is present and the treatment specialty is ophthalmology. This is displayed by provider and month recorded during the April 2020 to September 2020 period.
NHS Digital routinely collects data from hospital providers regarding a patient's time at hospital as part of the Commissioning Data Set (CDS). This is then processed and is returned to healthcare providers as the Secondary Uses Service (SUS) data set and is used by the NHS for operational purposes. Most NHS hospital trusts submit data on a monthly basis by deadline following a two-phase reconciliation process to arrive at a final agreed position for each month's activity defined in the NHS Standard Contract for payment purposes. This data is consolidated, validated and cleaned and then used to create the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data set which is released on a monthly basis as official statistics.
As a number of trusts now submit data as part of the CDS more frequently such as weekly or even sometimes daily. This subset of more frequently reported management information data reported in SUS provides opportunity for additional insights from that which might be immediately available in HES data. To help unlock the opportunities this SUS data can provide to produce management information the following data quality dashboard output has been published with the intention to:
- help with working to improve the quality of the data derived from SUS
- to assist in interpreting meaning and insight from the current SUS APC data
- help understand which providers have more up to date data
