CHANGE NOTICE: Following a recent consultation, we have made several changes to our data processing and methodology for the 21 February 2019 publication. The figures produced under the new methodology are not comparable with any previously published figures. Revised figures for December 2017 and September 2018 have been calculated and published as part of the 21 February 2019 publication and revised historical figures from September 2015 to current will be published 25 April 2019. The online interactive dashboard has not yet been updated; figures for December 2018 and with the revised figures using the new methodology will be released on 25 April 2019.

A provisional view of GP workforce by type working in General Practice.

CHANGE NOTICE: For the first time this publication includes information on all General Practice staff groups: GPs, Nurses, Direct Patient Care, and Administrative.  Time series information is available with the data tables for each staff group.

The general practice data records numbers and details of GPs, Nurses, Direct Patient Care and Admin/Non-Clinical staff in England. Time series data is available within the Excel tables together with more detailed information for December 2017 data for England, by NHS England Regions, Health Education England Regions, Clinical Commissioning Groups and practice.

This report is one of several publications presenting details of staff numbers within the NHS workforce. Links to these publications are at the bottom of the page.

Given the classification of 'Provisional Experimental statistics' NHS Digital invites comments and feedback on the methodology applied. Feedback is welcomed via email.

Please email us with your comments and suggestions, clearly stating NHS Workforce as the subject heading, via or contact 0300 303 5678.

Electronic Staff Record (ESR) information for December 2017 is not available at the time of publication, therefore ESR data from September 2017 has been used. It is for this reason that the General and Personal Medical Services in England December 2017 workforce report has been labelled 'Provisional'.

Final December 2017 data will be available May 2018. The move from provisional to final figures generally involves small changes to the figures taking into account the latest ESR data and it is the opportunity for other amendments.

We hope this information is helpful and would be grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes to complete a short customer satisfaction survey.
