New requests received by local authorities

There are approximately 2 million requests for support with social care services for new clients each year. This demand is broadly growing in line with population increases.

When looking at growth as a proportion over the last five years, increases in new requests are particularly evident in the 18-64 age group.

Other types of demand for local authority social services, such as adult safeguarding and applications to authorise deprivations of liberty (DoLS), have also mostly shown a year-on-year increase.
