Directly age and sex standardised mortality rate from respiratory disease for people aged under 75 in the respective calendar year per 100,000 registered patients.
There has been a change to the processing of the Primary Care Morality Database and the standard population used in the calculation of this indicator. The standard population has changed from ONS mid-year population estimates to the European standard population (ESP) 2013. This change was introduced as a result of guidance from the indicator methodology review group (MRG), who advised use of a static standard population would enable time series analysis. The ESP is a theoretical population adding up to a total of 100,000 which is widely used to produce European age-standardised rates, and was chosen for consistency with other similar indicators. The ESP population profile will differ slightly to the English population profile, however, it is designed to be broadly representative of the age distribution over the next 30 years or so. The paper relating to changes to the standardisation method as reviewed by MRG is available here: https://digital.nhs.uk/binaries/content/assets/website-assets/services/imas/standardisation-methods.pdf
