Primary care support and guidance

Information for GP practices on managing the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Video consultations

There are various video consultation solutions available in the market. You can see the link below for a selection of these solutions.

These systems enable your practice to offer consultations remotely, online.

GP Connect

Our secure service GP Connect is helping GP practices get the patient information they need to offer care, and to enable electronic transfer of Covid Clinical Assessment Service (CCAS) patients to primary care.

To help the NHS to respond to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we are giving authorised staff, including GPs, authorised GP practice staff and NHS 111 clinicians access to the GP records of the patients they are treating, regardless of where they are registered. We are also opening shared appointments for all practices so that staff can book appointments for patients across the GP estate (by local arrangement). This will enable healthcare professionals to provide more timely care and provide flexibility for the primary care system. This change will apply for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic only. Unless alternative arrangements have been put in place before the end of the emergency period, this change will be reversed.

Set up GP Connect to support electronic transfer of CCAS patients. This allows CCAS to book appointments directly into your clinical system. CCAS will pass certain patients suspected of suffering from coronavirus (COVID-19) out to primary care when appropriate, for further assessment and treatment.

Remote Clinical Desktop

The Remote Clinical Desktop (RCD) is a virtual desktop designed to be downloaded on a Windows PC or Apple Mac. It provides an alternative way for primary care staff to access their clinical systems remotely if they can't work at their usual workplace.

It is a limited live service release (currently up to 500 users) provided by NHS Digital up to 31 December 2021.

Find out more about the Remote Clinical Desktop.
