Summary

Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) is a data warehouse containing records of all patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. It contains details of inpatient care, outpatient appointments and A&E attendance records.

Hospital episode statistics (HES) statistics are produced and published on a monthly basis. This data is provisional and should therefore be treated as an estimate until the final National Statistics annual publications.

The publication series has recently been reviewed and now includes the most up to date provisional data within the headline figures presented. This change was first made in the 'Month 10 ' HES release in March 2016. This publication releases 'Month 1' data for the first time.

Please note that from this month's publication, data quality notes are no longer made available in a PDF file. Instead they are available in the Excel file "HES Data Quality Notes", which can be accessed via the link shown under 'Related Links' below.
