Summary

The NHS Information Centre published these estimates of NHS staff earnings on 17 March 2008. Based upon payments to staff between October and December 2007, we present estimates of annual basic pay and total earnings for NHS staff groups (excluding GPs and high street dentists).

We've taken pay data from the 88 per cent of NHS organisations using the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) during the period. All organisations are due to be using ESR by April 2008 and we will update the estimates quarterly as more organisations come onboard ESR.

The methodology used to produce these estimates is available above. Once all organisations are on ESR, we will review the frequency of publications. We'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

Highlights

  •  The NHS pay award was implemented in November. Consequently these figures contain a mixture of earnings on old and new payscales. We recommend waiting for the next publication in June before assessing the impact of the pay award on a full quarter's data.
  • Average full time basic pay for qualified nurses is estimated to be £27,600, with total earnings of £31,800. These have increased by just over 5% from the previous quarter's estimates. This is thought to be a combination of the effect of the new payscale and a large number of staff having 1 November as their Agenda for Change incremental point date.
  • Consultants on the new contract are estimated to earn a total of £114,300 per full time equivalent.
