Summary
The 2007/08 Dental Earnings and Expenses Report, Northern Ireland, provides a detailed study of the earnings and expenses of self-employed General Dental Services (GDS) dentists who were registered with the Northern Ireland Central Services Agency to provide NHS dental services in 2007/08. The results relate to dentists with varying levels of self-employment earnings from both NHS and private dental work.
This is the first time that The NHS Information Centre has published earnings and expenses data for dentists in Northern Ireland. As such, this report has been labelled as 'Experimental Statistics', in keeping with the UK Statistics Authority's Code of Practice. A key part of the "Experimental Statistics" label is user engagement in the evaluation of those statistics, and The NHS IC invites readers to comment on this publication, which will help inform the next report. Comments may be sent to [email protected].
This report was produced by The NHS Information Centre for health and social care, in consultation with a working group comprised of representatives from the Department of Health, the Welsh Assembly Government, the Northern Ireland Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, the British Dental Association, the secretariat for the Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration Review Body, the NHS Business Services Authority Dental Services, and the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants. Earnings and expenses analyses are performed by HM Revenue and Customs statisticians, and only aggregate non-disclosive summary data are sent to The NHS IC for inclusion in the report.
The NHS IC has also published a separate 2007/08 Dental Earnings and Expenses Report, England and Wales; differences in contractual arrangements between Northern Ireland and England and Wales mean that comparisons between the two reports cannot be made.
