New annual A&E statistics report published

17 October 2017

The Hospital Accident and Emergency Activity, 2016-17 report combines data from NHS Digital's Hospital Episode Statistics and NHS England's A&E Attendances and Emergency Admissions Monthly Situation Reports in an extensive report into emergency care produced in collaboration by the two organisations.

For the first time, the statistics also include a time series on the annual total of patients who have re-attended A&E within seven days. These figures are broken down by age and gender.

Information in the report includes:

  • figures on the number of A&E attendances - broken down by department type and age
  • A&E waiting times
  • the busiest periods for A&E departments

Provider level analysis of the figures are also available as part of this release.
