Age

The largest age group employed was 35 to 39 years (19%), closely followed by 40 to 44 years (18%). We also found that:

  • the smallest employee age groups are under 24 years (2%) and over 65 years (1%) - the NHS pension retirement age for some longer serving staff is 60 years, which may account for the low levels of employees aged 65 and over - we plan to increase the number of apprentice and graduate opportunities during the next year, which may increase the amount of younger employees
  • the age profile of candidates remained fairly consistent through all stages of the recruitment process
  • most 35 to 44 year olds were recruited to band 7 posts (56.6%)
  • 5.6% of job applications came from people aged 55 years and over and 5.8% of appointed staff were aged between 55 and 64
  • 95% of staff survey respondents aged between 16 and 25 years and who declared their age felt that the experience gained at NHS Digital will help them with their future career prospects
  • more younger employees agree that there are opportunities for them to develop their careers in NHS Digital, with this figure decreasing the higher the age group, based on those who responded to the staff survey
