Mental Health Services Data Set

Data Provision Notice requiring submission of data by providers of mental health services to fulfil the requirements of version 6.0 of the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS).

 

Overview

NHS Digital has been directed by NHS England to deliver the collection and analysis of information from mental health services providers in England.

The collection, known as the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS), is a patient level, output-based, secondary uses data set to deliver nationally consistent and comparable person-based information for children, young people and adults who are in contact with mental health, learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder services. 


Scope

This Notice is served on:

Service providers and organisations in England that provide specialist secondary mental health and/or learning disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder services (irrespective of funding arrangements) including:

  • NHS Mental Health Trusts
  • NHS Acute Trusts
  • NHS Community Health Trusts
  • Independent and third sector healthcare providers and any other qualified providers offering a service model that includes NHS funded and non-NHS funded patients.

Legal basis


Period

Version 6.0 of the Mental Health Services Data Set will come into effect on 1 April 2024, with submission as set out in the MHSDS submission timetable.

Updates

19 February 2024: This Notice has been updated to confirm the change to version 6.0 of the MHSDS (from version 5.0). Further detail of changes made from v5.0 to v6.0 of the MHSDS can be found on the MHSDS Tools and Guidance and on the MHSDS DAPB webpage.

26 September 2022: This Notice has been updated to confirm the change to version 5.0 of the MHSDS (from version 4.1). This is a retrospective change and has no impact on current submission practice.
