We provide a range of indicators, official statistics, reports, audits, surveys, systems and services relating to the NHS and social care system.
Indicators allow organisations to measure and benchmark progress toward goals. NHS Digital publishes over a thousand indicators covering quality through to population health and outcomes of treatments. Most of our indicators can be browsed through our catalogue, but custom tools are also available for finding and using indicators. Some of them are listed below.
NHS Digital's Indicator Portal brings a range of health indicators together in one place. Providing quick and easy access to approximately 1,900 indicators, it's a valuable information resource for all health and social care professionals, not just information specialists. Currently these include:
The CCG Outcomes Indicator Set (CCG OIS)
Is an integral part of NHS England's systematic approach to quality improvement.
Compendium of Population Health Indicators
A wide-ranging collection of over 1,000 indicators designed to provide a comprehensive overview of population health at a national, regional and local level. These indicators were previously available on the Clinical and Health Outcomes Knowledge Base website (also known as NCHOD).
Local Basket of Inequalities Indicators (LBOI):
This collection of 60 indicators helps organisations to measure health and other factors which influence health inequalities such as unemployment, poverty, crime and education. These indicators used to be available on the London Health Observatory website.
NHS Outcomes Framework:
The NHS Outcomes Framework sets out the outcomes and corresponding indicators used by the Secretary of State to hold NHS England to account for improvements in health outcomes.
Patient Online Management Information (POMI):
The Patient Online services indicator set was commissioned by NHS England to monitor progress against a government ambition for all patients who wish it to have online access to services in general practices.
Quality Accounts are annual reports about the quality of services provided by an NHS healthcare service. Links to the data for the fifteen mandatory indicators, based on recommendations by the National Quality Board, are set out here, to enable providers easy access to the latest data.
We collect and publish a wide range of information on adult social care, which you can use to plan, deliver and monitor services.
Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI):
The Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) reports mortality at trust level across the NHS in England using a standard and transparent methodology. We have produced and published this quarterly as an Official Statistic since October 2011.
The Prescribing Toolkit contains sets of data (indicators and comparators) likely to be routinely required by those working with prescribing in primary care.
Social care and mental health indicators from the National Indicator Set
These indicators are an important part of the new performance framework for local government. They meet the Government's commitment to introduce a clear set of national outcomes and a single set of national indicators by which to measure them. The first official year for these indicators is 2008-09. You can find official statistics on these indicators in our catalogue, and the data behind them is available through the National Adult Social Care Intelligence Service (NASCIS) online analytical tool.
Our official publications cover a range of topics from GP earnings to the number of school children who have taken drugs. They include new, or experimental, statistics, and national statistics set by the Office of National Statistics (ONS). Official statistics are all listed on our publications calendar, and you can search for official statistics by subject, year, and other criteria using our catalogue.
In addition to official statistics, NHS Digital is often asked to provide additional research on various topics. You can browse these other reports and statistics in our catalogue.
These national audits are designed to measure the quality of patient care and improvements over time. Each audit looks at the care patients are receiving and gives clinicians reliable, valid information that helps them review their performance and identify areas where they can make improvements. Audits can be searched and browsed via our catalogue.
NHS Digital publishes results from surveys of both patients and health and social care staff on everything from experience to treatment results and lifestyles. You can find publications of survey results in our catalogue. We also offer a custom survey service.
We support the creation of IT infrastructure, information systems and standards to ensure information flows efficiently and securely across the health and social care system, to improve patient outcomes. A list of all systems and tools we provide is available in the systems section of our website.
