The Academy at NHS Digital

Summary

If you are thinking about a professional career in the NHS, are prepared to work hard to improve your skills and prospects, share our vision and values, then we can help you succeed.

Our training programmes

We have four training programmes:

Graduate scheme

The graduate scheme is a two year training programme, run by NHS Digital, to develop our workforce to meet the future needs of our business.

Apprenticeship scheme

An apprenticeship combines a practical job with study. The standards are designed by industry organisations and end with a qualification, ranging from GSCE to degree level.

Summer internships

Summer internships are an eight-week fixed-term paid opportunity. Interns are usually undergraduates or further education students looking for industry experience in their summer vacation.

Industry placements

Industry placements form part of a student's degree course and involve working in a role related to their degree subject for 12 months.

Who are we?

The Academy sit at the heart of NHS Digital, providing early career development opportunities to individuals who are passionate about using information and technology to provide better health and care.

We support the organisation to attract great people and develop talent to meet our future workforce needs.

What we do

We are responsible for ensuring that NHS Digital attract and develop high quality trainees, recruiting to early careers development schemes such as graduate, apprentice, industry placement and summer internships.

We achieve this by:

  • attracting and selecting talented people at the early stage of their career journey
  • engaging with students, school leavers and people looking for a career, sources of talent such as universities, our own workforce and other organisations
  • providing the best experience, training and support for all trainees
  • working to improve quality through innovation
  • raising the profile of NHS Digital as an employer of choice for early careers

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for talented and driven individuals who want to start a new career with us. You will be passionate about new technologies and full of ideas and initiative. Above all you will have a willingness to learn.

How our trainees are supported

Trainees will receive a competitive starting salary while learning new skills and gaining qualifications.

Every trainee will have a support network including our Academy team, a career manager, a buddy and a community of practice.

At the end of a structured programme, trainees who meet the scheme success criteria -  which include demonstrating professional competencies and NHS Digital values and behaviours - will be eligible to join us on a permanent basis and an increased salary.

Matt Puzey, Academy Alumnus, Software Development Engineer:

"The graduate scheme kickstarted my career. I was able to move between projects and gain hands-on experience, delivering some of the most critical services in the NHS.

The breadth of experience available to me provided me with the perfect foundation to develop the broad skillset that's required in today's tech industry. Now I'm building public-facing, cloud-based services using cutting edge AWS technologies.”
